Picky Eater SOS: How to Expand Your Toddler's Palate
If your toddler's diet consists of beige foods and a side of tantrum, you're not alone. I hear this from Toronto parents every single week. The good news: picky eating is a normal developmental phase, and it is absolutely fixable.
1. Keep Offering — Without Pressure
It can take 10-15 exposures before a child accepts a new food. Offer broccoli, don't force it, and model eating it yourself. Eventually, curiosity wins.
2. Involve Them in Preparation
Toddlers who help wash vegetables or stir batter are more likely to try the finished product. Make cooking a toddler-friendly activity.
3. No Separate Meals
Cook one family meal. If your toddler refuses it, that's okay — but don't become a short-order cook. Consistency is key.
4. Make Food Fun
Use cookie cutters for sandwiches, arrange fruit into faces, or create a "rainbow plate" challenge. Playfulness reduces pressure.
5. Watch for Pressure and Bribes
Saying "eat your veggies and you get ice cream" creates unhealthy food relationships. Instead, serve small portions alongside familiar favourites.
With patience and consistency, most picky eaters naturally expand their palate by age 5. If you're worried about nutritional intake, I'm here to help — let's build a plan together.
